The data-acquisition (DAQ) system of the CMS detector has been rebuild for the 2nd run of the LHC. I will present the new system which fulfills higher requirements while being an order of magnitude smaller than the previous DAQ. I will also describe the challenges met to achieve the required performance and discuss the remaining issues to be tackled during run II. Finally, I will give an outlook on opportunities and challenges of future DAQ systems for the upgraded CMS detector.

Remi Mommsen works for Fermilab on the data-acquisistion system of the CMS experiment at CERN, Switzerland. He received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Bern, Switzerland, for his contributions to the trigger, data acquisition, and detector design in ATLAS. He was in charge of the development, deployment, and timely execution of the central data processing in BaBar. He lead the upgrade and operation of the level-1 track trigger at D0.
