Tigran Mkrtchyan is dCache project leader at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY). He has been instrumental in developing dCache into state of the art high performance storage system capable of delivering hundreds of Petabytes of data to scientific applications distributed across the globe.


From its inception, dCache incorporated into its design key features that not only allowed it to achieve performance, scalability and longevity of the system, but also turned out to be the kind of forward looking choices that can be seen in the designs of many storage systems available on the market today; for example: namespace and data location separation, distributed architecture with an inter-component message queue and elements of the object store.

When dCache was chosen as the storage solution for the CDF experiment, DESY and Fermilab formed the dCache collaboration, dcache.org, later joined by NDGF after dCache was selected as the storage solution for LHC experiments.

Over the years dCache has evolved from an hsm-backed disk-caching system into a general purpose storage system with an unprecedented degree of flexibility when it comes to data flow, data lifecycle, quality of service and user authentication and authorization management as well as support of wide array of community and standard I/O protocols.

This seminar will highlight current and future developments in dCache, with a focus on use cases that are particularly relevant to our user community.
