Event Info: Abstract:
More often than not, a "cloud" refers to an "Infrastructure-as-a-Service" (IaaS) cloud, such as Amazon EC2, where IT infrastructure is deployed in a cloud provider's datacenter in the form of virtual machines. With the growing popularity of IaaS clouds, an ecosystem of tools and technologies is emerging that can transform an organization's existing infrastructure into a "private cloud" or a "hybrid cloud".

In this presentation, I will describe OpenNebula (http://www.opennebula.org/), an open-source toolkit used to research the challenges that arise in virtual infrastructure management, but also used in both academia and industry to manage clouds. Besides providing an introduction to OpenNebula, the talk will also provide examples of how OpenNebula is being used "in the wild" by other users (such as a group in CERN that has used OpenNebula to manage as many as 7,500 VMs at a time), the software ecosystem that has grown around OpenNebula, and the future directions in the project.

Speaker Bio:
Borja Sotomayor is a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago's Department of Computer Science, and the OpenNebula project's Community Manager. His dissertation focuses on how to efficiently allocate and manage virtualized computational resources, a subject that has become specially relevant in the area of IaaS cloud computing. He is the developer of Haizea (http://haizea.cs.uchicago.edu/), an open-source virtual machine scheduler, and collaborates with the OpenNebula project (http://www.opennebula.org/), an open-source virtual infrastructure manager. He is the author of several papers on resource management and has also written a programming book for the Globus Toolkit (http://www.globus.org/).
